Convicted murderer escapee, 19-year-old Josef Toney, has been questioned about his actions after he escaped the Bernalillo County Detention Youth Center in Albuquerque. Toney was convicted of fatally shooting Ariel Mallam and Jessica Lucero in 2021 and is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on both counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, abandonment of a child, and tampering with evidence. The current current law prevents children from being housed with adults at the Youth Detention Center if they are convicted of a crime such as murder or attempting to escape jail. The case is currently being investigated by the Albuquerque Police Department and the Metropolitan Detention Center.
