A cybersecurity issue forced the University of New Mexico Health System, a major New Mexico hospital to divert patients and close clinics due to the issue, forcing it to send ambulances to other hospitals and leaving the state without an emergency department capable of treating the most serious injuries. The University of N.M. Health System cancelled appointments at its main hospital in Albuquerque and cancelled classes at its more than 30 clinics. The issue was not immediately clear, but it has raised concerns about the security of digital systems that underpin essential services such as banking and medical care. The hospital network conducts about 900,000 outpatient visits and receives 100,000 emergency room visits each year, and operates the state's only Level 1 trauma center.
