Albuquerque Bans Crypto ATMs, Orders Removal by Dec. 5

Albuquerque's ban on crypto ATMs and cashier-facilitated crypto transactions took effect Wednesday, giving existing machines until Dec. 5 to be removed. Albuquerque, New Mexico, has implemented the Virtual Currency Ordinance, which bans virtual currency ATMs and cashier-facilitated crypto transactions within city limits. Existing machines must stop operating immediately and be physically removed by Dec. 5, and violators may face fines of $500 a day and revocation of their business license. The ordinance, which does not ban crypto itself, allows residents to own, mine and transfer virtual currency through online exchanges and personal wallets. The city says these kiosks have been used in impersonation and coercive payment schemes, which can affect anyone, particularly vulnerable residents. The measure was sponsored by City Councilors Stephanie Telles and Tammy Fiebelkorn and approved on Sept. 9.
