Albuquerque Veterans Food Pantry Strained by SNAP Work Rules

New SNAP work rules are forcing Albuquerque veterans into food pantry lines just to eat. New federal SNAP work rules have resulted in increased reporting requirements for many New Mexico recipients, including veterans who previously had automatic exemptions. The requirement requires recipients to complete 80 hours of work or other approved activities each month and report these hours when renewing, unless they qualify for an exemption. The rules have impacted New Mexico, a state with a large veteran population, where there are over 100,000 veterans. The new rules removed automatic exemptions for veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and former foster youth. Statewide, roughly 55,750 New Mexicans will need to meet the new requirements to keep receiving SNAP in 2026. Food bank officials have reported a 40% to 60% increase in people seeking help this year, with many returning users being return users rather than first-timers. Fuel costs to transport food have also increased 70% compared with last year.
