The military aircraft took off from Albuquerque International Sunport, New Mexico’s main international airport. The pilot, the only person on board, was conscious and taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital with serious injuries, according to airport officials and Albuquerque Fire Rescue.
As of the evening of May 28, the pilot’s condition was stable.
The plane that crashed was a new F-35. A Defense Contract Management Agency pilot flew the aircraft being transferred from Lockheed Martin for commissioning.

“The pilot ejected from the aircraft safely,” Lockheed Martin said in a statement. “Safety is our priority and we will adhere to proper investigative protocol.”
