Despite head coach Eric Morris' absence from the game, interim Drew Svoboda led the team to a strong showing. American Conference Offensive Player of the Year Drew Mestemaker finished his first full season as a starter with a 250-yard, 3-touchdown showing. Despite a late push from San Diego, the Mean Green managed to secure their 12th victory in the tournament.
